تُعتبر هذه اللوحة  من أشهر اللوحات  في العالم  ومن أكثرها استنساخا ورواجا. كان روبيرتو  فيروتزي  يريد رسم  صورة ترمز للأمومة ولهذا اسماها في البداية “مادونينا” التي تعني بالإيطالية  الأمّ  الصغيرة، ولم يكن بذهنه  أبدا أن يرسم  صورة دينية. لكن مع مرور السنوات أصبح الناس ينظرون إلى اللوحة  كصورة  أيقونية  للعذراء  وطفلها الرضيع،  وربّما كان هذا الخلط  سببا إضافيا في الشهرة والشعبية  الدائمة التي اكتسبتها. الموديل في اللوحة اسمها انجيلينا. كانت وقتها في الحادية عشرة من عمرها، والطفل الذي تحمله هو شقيقها الأصغر ذو الأشهر العشرة، كان الرسّام قد رأى الفتاة والطفل في فينيسيا ذات شتاء. كانت ترتدي ملابس ثقيلة وتحمل شقيقها إلى صدرها لحمايته من البرد. ورغم أنها كانت ما تزال صغيرة السنّ، إلا أنها كانت تُظهر إحساسا عميقا بالأمومة وهي تحتضن الطفل. كان فيروتزي في ذلك الوقت  في الأربعينات من عمره، وقد رأى انجيلينا فذهل لجمالها وبراءة ملامحها وقرّر أن يرسمها هي وشقيقها.

This painting is considered among the most famous paintings in the world and one of the most widely reproduced and popular.  Roberto Ferruzzi wanted to draw a picture symbolizing motherhood, and that is why he called it at first “Madonina”, which means in Italian the little mother, and he never had in mind to paint a religious picture.  But over the years, people began to look at the painting as an iconic image of the Virgin and her infant child.  Perhaps this confusion was an additional reason for the fame and lasting popularity     that it gained 
The model in the painting is called Angelina.  She was eleven years old at the time.  The child she is carrying is her ten-month-old younger brother.  The painter had seen the girl and the child in Venice one winter.  She was wearing heavy clothes and carrying her brother to her chest to protect him from the cold
Although she was still young, she was showing a deep sense of motherhood as she embraced the child.  Turuzzi was in his forties at the time. He saw Angelina and was amazed at her beauty and innocence. He decided to paint her and her brother
